Our Garage Floor Makeover: Part Two

Wednesday, January 7, 2015

So after our first few steps with updating the garage floors, we started phase two...PAINTING! Again, we followed the directions to a T but realized that we had to do two coats of paint (which is fine, just don't add flakes until the second coat). We also started realizing that the paint wouldn't hold onto some areas of the floor. Instant nerves. We truly had all of the moisture up! So we also added a dehumidifier from our basement to see if that helped, which it seemed to do!

 Coat One, done!
Onto coat two, once you paint a 2'x6' section, stop and spread the flakes as if you are sprinkling rose petals. Jon painted, I sprinkled!

You want to let the floors dry for at least 24-hours before allowing foot traffic. I think we waited an entire week to drive on the floors.

Overall we were very happy with our floors! They looked beautiful compared to the before and after. Then Snowmageddon came. I don't know if it was because of the cold or the snow or what it was, but now there are marks in the floor where we park our cars. The paint came up! We SWEAR the moisture was gone and the oil stains were up. We followed the directions and even Valspar and the folks at Lowes said we did everything right. Valspar was kind enough to refund us since we were not satisfied. Despite the floors not working as we hoped, we still value them as a company. They were great with us! But obviously something went wrong. It was such a bummer. So for a few months, it worked! Here is what they look like now:
As you can see in the above and below pictures, there are chunks of paint missing as well as tire tracks.
We also painted our door black! We think it looks a lot better than the dirty, toddler-print white door.
We pull our trash out weekly, so we have to keep those in the garage which eats up a ton of space. We would love to put storage where the bins and shoe racks are, but have no idea how to fit the two cars, trash bins and storage. It is a tight fit once both cars are in there. So we have a lot of planning to do!

Eventually, we will add tile to make it look presentable again. Ahhh, the joys of homeownership!

So any DIY fails that you have struggled with?
